Our Story
The Person Behind The Real Scoop
Tammy Skater was born and raised in Hagersville, Ontario. Growing up, both of her parents were self-employed. Times were tough back then, and witnessing their struggles, Tammy felt that self-employment wasn’t a viable option when it came time to choose her own career path.
After completing university and earning her degree, she soon discovered that the career she had chosen wasn’t the right fit. Not long after, she met her husband, David, and the couple welcomed two daughters. Tammy was fortunate to stay home with her children until their youngest was about eight years old.
When she re-entered the workforce, it was in a minimum-wage position within the service industry. Over the years, Tammy’s dedication, diligence, professionalism, and caring attitude earned her the respect and admiration of her employers. She contributed to the success of their business and was frequently commended for her outstanding customer service skills. This experience ignited a spark, and Tammy began to see the possibility of running her own business.
Tammy and David also found some success investing in real estate over the years. These ventures not only provided financial stability but also planted the seeds for what would come next. Owning a business became a frequent topic of discussion between them, and eventually, their real estate investments helped turn their dreams into reality.
In June 2017, David came across an opportunity he couldn’t refuse. This new venture took their family from one of Ontario’s prettiest towns to another of Canada’s most beautiful destinations—Wolfville, Nova Scotia. With their children now old enough to fend for themselves, Tammy was finally able to focus on her future and pursue her dream of opening her own business.
After some soul-searching, Tammy decided to open an ice cream shop. Her vision was to create a business that would bring joy to both herself and her customers. She wanted something genuine—a shop that produced premium, made-on-site ice cream using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. For Tammy, ice cream was more than just a treat. It had been a staple in her family’s life, bringing them together and making them smile. She wanted to share that experience with as many people as possible.
In November 2017, Tammy signed the lease for a space at 10 Gaspereau Avenue in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. At the time, the location was little more than an idea, but a target opening date of March 3, 2018, was set. Choosing the perfect name for the shop was a family effort, with credit going to their eldest daughter.
Tammy and David conducted extensive research to ensure the shop would deliver a premium product and a unique customer experience. They sought out the best niche equipment and consulted with professionals in the industry. With the help of the community, dedicated staff, and countless hours of hard work, their vision came to life.
On March 3, 2018, The Real Scoop Ice Cream & Espresso Shop officially opened its doors.
